Most AC failures don’t come out of nowhere — there’s usually a stretch of weeks or months where the system is quietly telling you something’s wrong before it stops working entirely. Here are the five most common warning signs, and what each one usually means.
1. Longer run times, same temperature setting
If your system used to reach your target temperature in 20 minutes and now takes 40, something is reducing its efficiency — commonly a dirty condenser coil, a low refrigerant charge, or a failing compressor working harder than it should to do the same job. This is often the earliest warning sign, and the easiest one to miss because nothing has actually “broken” yet.
2. Warm spots or uneven cooling room to room
If some rooms cool fine and others lag noticeably behind, that can point to a ductwork issue, a failing blower motor not moving enough air, or (in a zoned system) a damper problem. 3. A new noise on startup or during operation
A healthy AC system runs at a fairly consistent volume. A new grinding, squealing, clicking, or banging sound is worth taking seriously — a squeal often points to a belt or motor bearing issue, clicking can be a relay or control board problem, and banging can mean a loose or broken internal component. None of these get better on their own.
4. Higher electric bills with no other explanation
A system that’s losing efficiency has to run longer and harder to do the same job, which shows up on your utility bill before it shows up as an obvious performance problem. If your summer electric bill is meaningfully higher than the same month last year and you haven’t changed your usage habits, it’s worth having the system checked.
5. The system is already 10+ years old
Age alone isn’t a failure sign, but it changes the math on every other item on this list. Most AC systems are expected to last 10–15 years.
